Laboratory Evaluation of Lettuce Seedlings

Problems associated with coated and primed lettuce seed as it ages
Another common process done to lettuce seed is priming.  This may also be referred to as physiological seed enhancement.  Priming is used to improve seed performance under specific environmental conditions – on lettuce this would be planting in very warm field conditions, often over 85°F.  Lettuce seed is often primed and/or coated before planting as it is an extremely useful process for the production of lettuce crops in California.  The laboratory test helps determine if these highly sophisticated processes have been done properly and whether the seed is beginning to deteriorate.
